The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination for medical professionals who want to practice medicine in the United States. It is required by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for international medical graduates (IMGs) and is recognized as a key qualification for physicians to obtain a medical license in the U.S.

USMLE Exam Details

1. Exam Format and Structure

The **USMLE** (United States Medical Licensing Examination) is a three-step examination process for medical licensure in the United States. Below are the details for each step:

Step 1: Basic Science Knowledge

  • Format: Computer-based test
  • Content: Biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology
  • Questions: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
  • Duration: 8 hours (7 hours of testing time)
  • Number of Questions: ~280 questions
  • Block Structure: 7 blocks, 60 minutes per block

Step 2: Clinical Knowledge (CK) & Clinical Skills (CS)

  • Clinical Knowledge (CK): Computer-based test
  • Content: Diagnosis, management, patient care
  • Questions: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with clinical vignettes
  • Duration: 9 hours (8 hours of testing time)
  • Number of Questions: ~318 questions
  • Block Structure: 8 blocks, 60 minutes per block

Note: Clinical Skills (CS) was discontinued as of 2021.

Step 3: Patient Management & Supervision

  • Format: Computer-based test with MCQs and case simulations
  • Content: Patient management, biomedical science, clinical applications
  • Duration: 16 hours (2 days)
  • Day 1: 7 hours of MCQs (232 questions)
  • Day 2: 9 hours of case simulations (6-8 cases)

2. Exam Dates and Scheduling

The USMLE exams are available year-round. Specific details are as follows:

  • Step 1 & Step 2 CK: Available year-round at Prometric test centers. Schedule through Prometric.
  • Step 3: Available throughout the year, but registration is recommended at least 6-9 months in advance.

3. Exam Results and Score Release Dates

Results for the USMLE exams are typically released as follows:

  • Step 1 & Step 2 CK: Results available **3-4 weeks** after the exam date.
  • Step 3: Results available **4 weeks** after the exam date.

All results are accessible via your USMLE account.

4. Registration Process and Fees

Registration Process:

  • Step 1 & Step 2 CK: Register online via NBME (or through ECFMG for international candidates).
  • Step 3: Register via FSMB (for U.S. applicants) or ECFMG (for international applicants).

Exam Fees:

  • Step 1: Approx. **$1,300 USD**

  • Step 3: Approx. **$895 USD**
